For our 3rd Annual Painted Violin, we asked local artist Teri Tompkins to create a work of art incorporating a design based on music or St. Augustine. Teri created a magical masterpiece titled “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” which is currently on display at Neff Jewelers located at 7 Rohde Avenue in Uptown St. Augustine.
The artist explains, “As a native of St. Augustine, I have had a fascination with our natural world since childhood – when our small town was still full of fireflies, wild creatures, and mystery. Secondly, I am consistently inspired by the transcendent works of Mozart, and often play his music in both the studio and during painting classes. Lastly, looking at the strange and challenging prospect of using a violin as a canvas, I started imagining the elaborate and outrageous paintings of Russian fairy tales, usually painted on wood.”
Teri continues, “On a beach walk, still at a loss over where to begin, these three seemingly different influences started to swirl and form images in my imagination. I consulted materials experts to insure an archivally sound artwork. What evolved was a St. Augustine fairy tale of sorts – a little night music – our own Eine Kleine Nachtmusik designed to help spread more music through our community.”
